Openverse: A Search Engine for Openly Licensed and Public Domain Works

Openverse is a tool for discovering and using openly licensed and public domain works. It searches over 800 million images and audio tracks from various public repositories and the Common Crawl dataset, offering features like one-click attribution for easy reuse. Currently focused on images and audio, Openverse plans to expand to other media types, such as open texts and 3D models, aiming to provide access to about 2.5 billion CC licensed and public domain works online.

The platform provides CC BY–licensed footage that creators can reuse with attribution and also aggregates results from other free and paid footage libraries. This resource supports students, researchers, and content creators by offering rights‑cleared, high‑quality video materials useful for academic projects, digital storytelling, media studies, and educational content creation.
