East West University Library is observing International Open Access Week 2022 from 24 to 30 October with a series of programs. For the last fourteen years, academic and research communities and libraries have participated in a global event, Open Access Week, “to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.
The theme of Open Access Week 2022 (October 24-30) is "Open for Climate Justice".
The Open Access Week organizers explain that:
Open Access can be a powerful tool for building more equitable systems of sharing knowledge. Rebuilding research and scholarship to be open by default presents a unique opportunity to construct a foundation that is fundamentally more equitable.
Climate Justice is an explicit acknowledgement that the climate crisis has far-reaching effects, and the impacts are “not be[ing] borne equally or fairly, between rich and poor, women and men, and older and younger generations,” as the UN notes. These power imbalances also affect communities’ abilities to produce, disseminate, and use knowledge around the climate crisis. Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and serve as a means to address the inequities that shape the impacts of climate change and our response to them.
This year’s focus on Climate Justice seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community. Sharing knowledge is a human right and tackling the climate crisis requires the rapid exchange of knowledge across geographic, economic, and disciplinary boundaries.
International Open Access Week is a time to coordinate across communities to make openness the default for research and to ensure that equity is at the center of this work. Selected by the Open Access Week Advisory Committee, this year’s theme is an opportunity to join together, take action, and raise awareness around how open enables climate justice.
East West University Library would like to observe this week from 24 October 2022 to 30 October 2022 with the following series of programs:
- Awareness building campaign on "Open Access Publishing Practices" among university communities through the East West University Library website as well as social media tools.
- Open Access Knowledge Competition will be organized based on the theme of this year "Open for Climate Justice"
- Promoting the essential benefits of using “Open Educational Resources” to the EWU Faculty members through library social media tools.
- A debate Competition on “Open Access in scholarly resources in higher education” for the students of East West University.
