UNESCO created International Literacy Day in 1967 to bring attention to this issue and it has been celebrated annually on 8th September ever since.
The theme for International Literacy Day 2024 is: "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace."
As UNESCO emphasizes, "Literacy is a fundamental human right for all. It opens the door to the enjoyment of other human rights, greater freedoms, and global citizenship."
This day underscores the critical role of literacy in building a just, peaceful, and sustainable world. In line with this, the Dr. S. R. Lasker Library, East West University commemorated the day by sharing diverse content across its social media platforms to highlight the significance of literacy.
