China and Democracy: Prospects for Democratization

Abstract: 

China's spectacular economic growth has captured worldwide attention. The magnitude and scale of economic development of China. Unprecedented in history, could lead to the reconfiguration of the international order. As the statistics of China's economic heal h began to hit the headlines, another type of discussion also began to arise. Namely the question of China's political future. Which way would China evolve in the near or distant future? Would it follow the historic Western trend towards democracy? If so, what would be the time frame, and more importantly what trends were discernible in the China of today to merit such transition? This article examines the issue of China's democratization by adopting theoretical and empirical perspectives. It begins with the definition of democracy and democratization. It then assesses the trends of democratization and analyzes the future of democracy in China.
